Sources: Klopp favourite now expected to quit Liverpool this summer

Liverpool are not expecting Thiago Alcantara to stay at the club beyond this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 32-year-old has only just returned from a hip injury after almost a year on the sidelines.

Thiago suffered several setbacks in his rehabilitation during that time before making his long-awaited comeback off the bench in Sunday’s (4 February) 3-1 loss away at Arsenal. He is expected to be in the squad also for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.

Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the midfielder after signing him from Bayern Munich in 2020 and almost always finds space for the Spaniard in his team when fit.

Klopp regards him as possessing a different skill-set to any of his other midfielders and able to set the tempo of the team’s performance in a manner that few players anywhere can.

However, with Klopp set to depart this summer – it is believed Thiago will need to stay fit and play a big role for the rest of the 2023-24 campaign to have any chance of landing an extension.

Thiago earns a reported £200,000-a-week on Merseyside and is yet to sign an extension since arriving at the club.

The right-footer has made just 98 appearances for Liverpool and has not been a regular starter since his initial signing.

He made just 14 league starts in the 2022-23 campaign with various injuries restricting his involvement.

Klopp’s Liverpool side underwent a significant midfield overhaul during the most recent summer window – with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai all arriving.

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were among the midfielders to leave Anfield.

Thiago’s return could boost Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title.

The Reds currently sit top on 51 points but have played a game more than second-place Man City – who have played a game less.
