Liverpool transfer news as 'plans made' for $43m ace amid battle for teenage sensation

Liverpool is not in Europa League action this week despite the competition returning in the knockout stages. The Reds secured top spot in its group and remain the favorites for the competition, having already secured a place in the last 16.

It means Jürgen Klopp is able to put his focus on this weekend's trip to Brentford, where Liverpool has shipped three goals in each of the last two seasons. With Manchester City and Arsenal in fine form, Klopp's side cannot afford to be so generous this time around.

Luton will also visit Anfield next week before the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. That could be the start of an unprecedented quadruple for Klopp ahead of his summer exit.

Despite the search for his successor being ongoing — and the lack of a sporting director — Liverpool is still being linked with reinforcements. That could give the new boss a head start when he takes over in the summer.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. It includes interest in a former Manchester United target and a teenage midfielder.

Chris Rigg (Sunderland)
The Reds continue to be linked with Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg but could face competition from its Premier League rivals. Rigg, 16, has caught the eye in the Championship but is expected to secure a move elsewhere this summer.

Manchester United and Chelsea are both keeping tabs on the midfielder but HITC reports Newcastle is hoping to sign him from its fiercest rivals. It is claimed that Rigg's family are in fact Newcastle fans and that could give the Magpies the edge.

However, it remains to be seen if Sunderland would be willing to strike a deal with Newcastle, and may well prefer him to join one of the other Premier League sides. He was valued at around $3.8m (£3m/€3.5m) last summer but that is likely to have increased significantly this season.
