Carragher says he's more worried about 25-year-old leaving Liverpool than Van Dijk or Salah

Jamie Carragher has told Liverpool fans which player they should now be most worried about leaving.

Since Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he only has a few months left at Liverpool, uncertainty has begun to circle over a number of key Reds players.

Virgil van Dijk has been suggested as someone who could easily follow Klopp out of the door, while Andy Robertson has surprisingly been mentioned in the same vein.

But according to Jamie Carragher for The Overlap, Liverpool fans should be more worried about losing Trent Alexander-Arnold. With 18 months left on his contract, there’s key months up ahead for the Reds vice captain. And Carragher thinks that keeping Trent should now be Liverpool’s main focus.

“Virgil van Dijk is not the biggest worry and neither is Mo Salah. It’s Trent Alexander-Arnold,” said the 46-year-old. “Those three players have 18 months to go. In 18 months Salah and Van Dijk will be 34 or 35. So this thing about we could lose Van Dijk, well it might actually be the right decision in 18 months.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is the one you have almost got to build this team around for a new manager. I think Van Dijk and Salah in 12 months’ time, the club will probably look at that and go you have six months to go, how are you feeling as a player. You would want to keep them if they are playing as they are right now, but 18 months is a long time in football.”

This is bang on the money from Carragher. Liverpool really need to be doing whatever possible to tie Alexander-Arnold down as soon as they can.

Although there was alarm over some of Van Dijk’s comments this week, it’s true that the Dutchman is now getting on a little.

Still at the peak of his powers, there’s every chance Virgil continues to be a key player at 34 or 35. But it may also be a risk to give him a couple of years extra on his contract.

The same goes for Salah, who’s a year younger than Van Dijk. Mo has been brilliant this season once again. But a drop off will likely occur at some stage.
