Sky pundit reacts to suggestion 41-year-old Dutchman could be Liverpool's next manager

In truth, given that Jurgen Klopp told the powers that be back in November that he was going to leave at the end of the season, then they have probably been looking around the managerial world already for their next boss.

Whilst the names of Xabi Alonso or Roberto De Zerbi get thrown about, perhaps the answer to Liverpool’s next manager is closer to home.

Pep Lijnders has been Jurgen Klopp’s right-hand man for a number of years now and it was questioned whether he could replace the German.

Former Championship manager Gary Rowett dismissed the idea and stated that it would be ‘very difficult’ for him, as he told Sky Sports (27/01/24 at 2:20 pm).

There is one thing being part of a coaching staff or being a number two, but it’s a completely different world when you are then told to step up.

Not only will the 41-year-old Dutchman, who has had one managerial job in his career, have to face the task of replacing someone as great as Jurgen Klopp.

But also the fact that if he is worthy of being the main guy in the dugout.

Pep Lijnders to replace Jurgen Klopp?
“Did you see Pep Lijnders was on there,” said Morrison. “You talk about not changing a lot of what has happened at Liverpool. He has been Jurgen Klopp’s assistant. Da you think he could fill that void and go into that or is it difficult because you have been an assistant?”

Rowett responded: “I think the obvious thing is that he would link him to that and he might be able to continue it.

“But I think it’s very difficult when you have worked under someone like Klopp to then do it a different way.”

At the end of the day, football management is about the here and now.

If Klopp had announced this 18 months ago, then the man that would have been near the top of the list is Graham Potter.

But after his ill-fated spell at Chelsea, he isn’t even getting a mention now, and instead, it’s De Zerbi being questioned.

Alonso was always going to be the obvious name thrown forward, but current Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has also been spoken about.
