Mohamed Salah gets new haircut for AFCON after Liverpool star was mocked over hairline

Mohamed Salah’s new haircut has been met by widespread approval from fans after his previous look was mocked online.

Salah has left Liverpool to play for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he is trying to avenge defeat on penalties against Senegal two years ago. He is focused on performing to the best of his ability when the tournament gets under way in Ivory Coast on January 13.

But as well as training Salah has found some time to visit the barbers and get a fresh new trim. The 31-year-old was previously sporting much longer hair, which had seen him cop some stick during the 4-2 win over Newcastle, in which he scored once and assisted the other goal, on New Year’s Day.

His scraggly locks saw him compared unfavourably to Krusty the Clown from the Simpsons, with the wet weather not complimenting his hair. Thankfully, Salah has redeemed himself in the eyes of the online commenters, who have been very complimentary.

"His barber saw the memes and said I got you," one wrote. Another joked: "He’s just been waiting to go to Egypt, gotta be loyal to your barber.” Another simply wrote: “5 years younger with that new hairstyle. Good luck king.” There were plenty of fire emojis in the replies, too, and Salah will be hoping the new look will bring good results for his side.

Egypt are in Group B with Ghana, Cape Verde and Mozambique and Salah is desperate to bring home the trophy. “I want to win this competition, I would love to win it,” he said. "But without me, I'm sure the [Liverpool] players will manage to win games. We have fantastic players, really good quality, they just need to keep the pressure away and just play their football. We have players who can play in my position, they can do what I am doing.
