Liverpool transfer target has already made 'dream' admission as Fernando Torres hint spotted

The January transfer window may have only just started, but Liverpool could already be looking ahead to the summer. Any substantial incomings are much more likely to come then than now.

There will be plenty of eyes on Anfield this month nonetheless, though. As the Premier League’s leader, with the season now past the halfway mark, the Reds have painted a big target on themselves, and their rivals will be looking to gain an advantage in the transfer market.

Whether Liverpool bolsters its squad at all this month remains to be seen, although Jürgen Klopp has played down any suggestions of signings being made already. That doesn’t mean the club isn’t on the lookout though, even if it might not result in any immediate arrivals.

According to the ECHO, Liverpool is monitoring the Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup, and is likely to do so for the remainder of the season with a January deal unlikely. It seems though the Reds are still searching for a new number six, despite Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endō both playing there this season.

Frendrup is an interesting, if somewhat out of the blue, target. The 22-year-old is having a good season with Genoa, having helped the Italian side win promotion back to Serie A last year.

Any Liverpool fans interested in finding out more about the defensive midfielder might have stumbled upon an interview released just a few weeks ago by Serie A. Titled ‘The best ball-winner in Serie A’, it certainly offers a lot of promise for the Reds before the video has even started.

But there’s a moment after a minute or so that will have caught Liverpool fans’ eyes even more. As the interviewer hands a selection of pictures from across Frendrup’s career so far, the first one shows the midfielder as a youngster, standing in front of a poster of Fernando Torres during his days at Anfield.

Frendrup reveals the picture was taken while he was at a boarding school back in his native Denmark, looking to start his football career with Brøndby, the same side that Liverpool signed Daniel Agger from. The Torres poster isn’t spoken about in the interview, but the midfielder’s love for Liverpool had already been confirmed anyway.

In a 2018 interview with Danish outlet Sjællandske Nyheder, a 16-year-old Frendrup speaks about the experience of moving to the boarding school, and his dreams of becoming a professional footballer. As part of the interview, it’s revealed that his favorite club is Liverpool, and he dreams of moving to Anfield in the future.

"It's a dream I've always had, and I believe it will succeed. If I work hard, I believe in it," Frendrup said. The picture with the Torres poster also makes an appearance in the article, with the caption referring to the former striker as Frendrup’s idol.

Liverpool then would appear to be on the right path if a new number six remains a priority later in the year. Frendrup is clearly a player of interest to the Reds, and they could make his dream come true with a transfer.
