Liverpool transfer news as release clause 'confirmed' and 'bids fly in' for Jürgen Klopp ace

Liverpool returns to FA Cup action today against Arsenal but that has not prevented the transfer rumor mill from turning. Jürgen Klopp has played down the chances of incomings in January but outgoing loans or even permanent exits are possible.

There is some chance that Liverpool could spot an opportunity. While the deal for Cody Gakpo was wrapped up in December ahead of the 2023 winter window, the previous year's agreement with FC Porto for Luis Díaz was struck late on after Spurs made a move for the winger, who the Reds were planning on signing the following summer.

If something like that happened again, or Liverpool was able to bring in a center-back to bolster its defensive ranks that suddenly became available unexpectedly, it is possible that some business could be done. But the most likely thing is that the Anfield powder is kept dry until the summer.

With the summer in mind, Liverpool will already be making plans. As well as defensive reinforcements, there is an argument for signing another midfielder then and the squad depth might need to be further bolstered because of the expanded Champions League format. Teams that qualify, and that should include Liverpool, will face an even more hectic schedule from next season.

Here is the verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. We start with an exciting Crystal Palace forward who could be a realistic option.

Michael Olise (Crystal Palace)
Liverpool and Manchester United are set to battle for Crystal Palace starlet Michael Olise, 22, during the summer transfer window, Football Transfers reports. The young French attacker supposedly has a release clause worth around $76m (£60m/€70m).

With a long-term succession plan to eventually replace Mohamed Salah being required at Anfield, Olise could be an interesting player to consider. But Liverpool should be looking to postpone the need to replace the Egyptian for as long as possible.
