Liverpool insiders confirm Reds are looking at signing 22-year-old midfielder

Liverpool insiders have confirmed that the Reds are looking into making a midfield signing.

Having bought themselves a brand new midfield over the summer, the feeling is that Liverpool could still do with one more. In particular someone to fill the long-term need for a No.6.

With that in mind, Genoa’s Morten Frendrup has recently been linked. The Reds are even said to be leading the chase for the 22-year-old.

And speaking on that to The Anfield Wrap this week, journalist Paul Gorst has shared what he’s been told by insiders at Liverpool about Frendrup.

“It was one that kind of cropped up a few weeks back now,” Gorst explains. “Speaking to people at the club, people outside the club and whatever else, it seems that he’s one Liverpool are looking at. But I’d caveat that with that they are looking at loads at the moment. I don’t know if there is a particular front-runner for the long-term defensive midfield position.

“He seems to be having a good year at Genoa. The big drawback for the people I’m speaking to at the club is that the homegrown issue is very much there. But maybe one to keep an eye on. Not for January but maybe in the summer.”

Liverpool run the rule over Frendrup
Prior to these links starting to surface, it’s debatable whether fans would have even heard of Frendrup at all.

Ask a portion of Liverpool supporters and they’d surely prefer to go for a household name like Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, who has been heavily rumoured to be a target.

But we rather like the fact that the Reds try and do these slightly under the radar deals.

It shows that despite the exits of Michael Edwards, Julian Ward and other members of Liverpool’s recruitment team over the years, their philosophy remains intact.

If the data says he’s good, and the Reds’ scouts are impressed, then Liverpool have enough credit in the bank to roll the dice and have the fans’ backing.

As Gorst points out though, there’s nothing anything like guaranteed yet with Frendrup. It would be interesting to know some names of other payers being assessed, but that will seemingly have to wait.

So too will any move for the Genoa man, with a summer arrival much more likely. Any fans hoping for a winter signing look set to be disappointed. But next season, it looks like we’ll get that long-awaited 6 with all been dreaming about. And it just might be Frendrup.
