Liverpool eyeing Championship star may upset Jurgen Klopp's trusted side-kick

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Sunderland star Anthony Patterson as they look to shake up their goalkeeper ranks. The 23-year-old has impressed in the Championship so far this season, keeping eight clean sheets in 27 league appearances.

Jurgen Klopp orchestrated a major rebuild of his midfield during the summer transfer window, with stalwarts Jordan Henderson and Fabinho among those to be replaced. Significant fees were then forked out to sign Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo to freshen up the central ranks, and the quartet have hit the ground running at Anfield.

With their midfield now well-stocked with talent for the foreseeable future, Liverpool are now turning their attention to alternative targets. The Reds are in the market for a young defender this month, with another forward acquisition also not ruled out.

According to Alan Nixon, Liverpool are also looking to bring in a new goalkeeper option and Klopp has identified Sunderland’s Patterson as a target. The shot-stopper has shone for Sunderland over the past 18 months and his performances have not gone unnoticed by the Reds, who are monitoring his situation closely.

Patterson is under contract with the Black Cats until 2028 meaning that the Championship club are in no rush to part ways with their goalkeeper, though a significant offer is likely to test their resolve as they look to return to the Premier League.

Liverpool are scouring the market for goalkeeping opportunities due to the ongoing uncertainty with Caoimhin Kelleher, who has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield. The 25-year-old has impressed when called upon by Klopp but he has never been able to succeed Alisson in between the sticks in Merseyside, prompting the Republic of Ireland international to weigh up whether to depart in search of more minutes elsewhere.

Klopp has never shied away from heaping the praise on Kelleher, and his assistant Pep Lijnders went as far as labelling the goalkeeper ‘world-class’ earlier this season. Discussing his situation, the Reds coach said: “Caoimh Kelleher has a long-term contract, for me, he can play in any Premier League team.
