Jurgen Klopp suggests what a lot of people say about £35m Liverpool player is totally wrong

Jurgen Klopp has praised Alexis Mac Allister for his performances in the no. 6 role for Liverpool despite plenty of opposition.

The Argentine international signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m in what was Liverpool’s first deal of the transfer window, with Mac Allister taking on a new role in the midfield.

Yet speaking to Sky Sports, Klopp has lauded the 25-year-old for his performances in the position, with many fans and pundits not yet sold on Mac Allister playing in a deeper midfield role for the Reds.

Klopp said: “I’ve known this boy since the summer. I knew him before but he didn’t play the single six at Brighton but he is an incredibly smart player and as long as you can create a compact formation, Macca is an outstanding six.

“You can all tell me what you want but he is an outstanding six. On the ball he’s better than all sixes you can imagine and against the ball he is just really strong.

“If the pitch is too big or the half spaces are too open then I don’t know a lot of sixes are that great but there might be a few who come off on the defensive side of it. But the game he played today was outstanding, the second half as well. He is so calm on the ball. He’s a really good player.”

For some, Mac Allister is still being used by Liverpool completely wrong, with the Argentine international showing over the years that he excels in an advanced role.

Yet Klopp has stuck to his guns this season over playing Mac Allister in a deeper role, and the Liverpool manager’s decision is now starting to pay off in a big way.

The midfielder was exceptional this weekend against AFC Bournemouth, and with Liverpool sitting five points clear at the top of the Premier League, it’s clear that Mac Allister is doing something right for the Reds.
