Report: 'Complete midfielder' now set for crunch meeting with his club, as Liverpool interest continues

Liverpool will be watching on with interest as Piotr Zielinski enters showdown talks with Napoli.

Zielinski almost signed for Liverpool back in 2016, only for Gini Wijnaldum to be brought in during Jurgen Klopp’s first summer window with the club.

Since then, the Reds been sporadically linked with having reignited their interest in the Polish midfielder. Despite Zielinski now being 29, those links surprisingly returned ahead of the summer and have continued as we head towards January.

The latest information comes from Italian site They claim that December will be a crucial month for Zielinksi, who’s contract is set to end next summer.

The 29-year-old and his agent will reportedly meet ‘more than once’ with Napoli over whether or not they’ll be extending their partnership together. The Serie A champions are claimed to have offered a new deal to Zielinski, but the player himself is said to be looking for better terms.

Although the Poland international is said to be prioritising staying where is, he does seemingly have other options. Inter have reportedly already made him an offer, while Juventus are also claimed to be interested. And then there’s Liverpool, who Calciomercato report still have Zielinski ‘on the radar.’

Zielinski future set to become clear
Whether Zielinski ends up signing on at Napoli or not, it’s really unlikely to make a difference to Liverpool.

Had this been three or four years ago, then that perhaps wouldn’t have been the case. Klopp is clearly a long-standing fan of the player and may have been interested in a potential bargain.

Zielinski’s former manager Carlo Ancelotti called him a ‘complete midfielder’ in 2021 [Football Italia] and it’s true that the former Empoli man could once have been an excellent addition at Anfield.

But Zielinski turns 30 before the transfer window opens at the end of the season. It feels very much like the proverbial ship has sailed.

If Liverpool needed a player like him, then that may not necessarily be the case. The Reds’ signing of Wataru Endo in August signalled that they can make exceptions for players the wrong side of 30.

But the plain reality is that Klopp is already stacked with players who can offer what Zielinski does.

If he were a more defensively minded midfielder, then it might be different. But even if Thiago Alcantara does leave next summer, Liverpool don’t necessarily need to replace him. They’re well covered.

The longer Zielinski goes without signing on again in Naples, the more likely it is that we’ll see further rumours of this nature. Nevertheless, we just can’t see it happening.
