Liverpool think they can buy £17m player to easily slot into their defence in January

Liverpool have now identified a possible deal during the January transfer window.

The Reds look set to be in the market for a new central defender, having seen Joel Matip ruled out for the season with an ACL injury.

Even with the news still so fresh, Liverpool have already been linked to a number of options. Today, Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix is the latest name doing the rounds.

The possibility of the Reds looking at Lacroix is one also put forward by 90min this afternoon. They claim that the 23-year-old is one of a seven-strong Liverpool shortlist, which is said to include Goncalo Inacio, Lucas Beraldo, Arthur Theate, Piero Hincapie and Jean-Clair Todibo.

But as exciting as some of those names are, a few of them simply aren’t realistic in January. One who Liverpool reportedly think is though, is Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.

It’s claimed that the Reds feel a ‘deal could be done’ for Tah in January. Furthermore, if they’re able to sort something out with Leverkusen, Liverpool are said to believe that the Germany international could ‘seamlessly slot into the side.’

Liverpool targeting Tah swoop
This is far from the first time Liverpool have been linked with a move for Tah. The Reds were said to be after him when he was a young player coming through in Germany.

Now 27 though, those links looked to be finished. With Liverpool often preferring to go for younger players, the Leverkusen man looked to have perhaps missed his shot.

But, somewhat surprisingly, rumours have re-emerged over the course of 2023.

Back in February, Liverpool were even said to have engaged in talks with Tah about a potential summer move.

For whatever reason, those talks never came to anything. But it didn’t stop the chattering’s in the press, with the German again said to be on Liverpool’s list in July.

Over the summer, it was claimed that a fee of as little as £17m may be enough to sign Tah, who was seemingly ready to leave Leverkusen.

Fast forward five months though, and no one’s wanting to leave Leverkusen now. Xabi Alonso has turned them into one of the most exciting teams on the continent. With Tah a key man for Alonso, surely his price has shot up once again.

As a result, we’d be sceptical of this. But if Liverpool are confident of bringing him in, then why not try it, he’d be a good addition.
