Liverpool linked with mega money move for German wonderkid

20-year-old German midfielder Florian Wirtz has rapidly become one of football’s brightest prospects. Playing for Bayer Leverkusen, he’s significantly contributed to their Bundesliga title campaign. His impressive performance has caught the eye of major clubs, with Liverpool reportedly leading the race to sign him.

Despite having already bolstered their midfield with four new players last summer, Liverpool, under Jurgen Klopp, show no signs of slowing down in strengthening their squad. As they aim for the league title, adding a talent like Wirtz could be a strategic move.

Currently under contract with Leverkusen until June 2027, Wirtz, a product of their academy, has already amassed 121 senior appearances, contributing 29 goals and 40 assists. Under the guidance of former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso, Wirtz has elevated his game, marking six goals and ten assists this season across various competitions.

Liverpool’s midfield, while competent, lacks direct goal contributions. The addition of Dominik Szoboszlai and the emergence of Curtis Jones have helped, but Wirtz’s unique style could fill this gap. His potential role at Liverpool could mirror Philippe Coutinho’s previous impact at Anfield.

In the past year, Wirtz has shown remarkable stats, averaging 7.06 progressive passes and 3.89 progressive carries per 90 minutes. His ability to maintain possession is evident, with an average of 59.40 completed passes per game and a 79.6% completion rate. These numbers, combined with his 5.84 shot-creating actions and 0.79 goals + assists per 90 minutes, make him a highly sought-after player.

Valued at around £75 million by Transfermarkt, securing Wirtz’s services might cost upwards of £80 million. Despite the hefty price tag, his transfer could become one of the most exhilarating in recent years, potentially transforming Liverpool’s midfield dynamics.
