Liverpool has $44m solution ready and waiting for Jürgen Klopp as Luis Díaz swap required

A hard-fought victory for Liverpool away against Crystal Palace saw Jürgen Klopp find a late solution to secure the three points, but the match was made more difficult after an underwhelming display from the forward line.

The Reds created little across the 90 minutes, and only really began to assert dominance once Palace forward Jordan Ayew was dismissed for receiving a second yellow card for stopping a counter-attack.

There is no shortage of strong names in Liverpool's front three, but as the busy festive period continues to heat up, it might be time to hand an opportunity to a $44m (£37m/€41m) star who added control when he was introduced on Saturday afternoon.

Cody Gakpo has had a bright start overall to his Liverpool career so far, with his early days seeing him look to as a potential Roberto Firmino successor. A difficult competition for places has seen him start just four games so far this season, but Klopp could now utilize his versatility to help garner maximum points.

Luis Díaz, although bright for the majority of the season, has been quiet in the last two games, though he has started all three matches for Liverpool over the six days. Díaz had the ball in the net before being ruled marginally offside against Palace late on, but the Colombian's display was far from his usual dynamism on the left.

Gakpo registered a 93.3 pass completion percentage in his second half spell against the Eagles, with his unselfish play opening up the game for the likes of Harvey Elliott, who eventually scored the winner in the 90th minute. And despite scoring just twice in 14 Premier League appearances this season, it is clear that Gakpo has a role to play in Liverpool's system, even when he is not the player directly benefitting from the goals and assists numbers.
