Pundit claims £35m Liverpool player barely got involved vs Manchester City, says he needs to do more

Alexis Mac Allister has been urged to do more for Liverpool after the midfielder’s performance on the weekend against Manchester City.

The Argentine international once again had a quiet game for the Reds, with Mac Allister admitting beforehand that he fell asleep in the team meeting leading up to the clash against City.

With the 24-year-old being involved for Argentina in World Cup qualifiers, it’s easy to see why Mac Allister was tired going into Saturday, yet Eamon Dunphy believes the midfielder should be doing more.

Speaking on The Stand, the pundit was critical of how Mac Allister performed at the Etihad Stadium, with the midfielder accused of not doing enough for Liverpool given the importance of the fixture.

Dunphy said about the former Brighton & Hove Albion star: “Mac Allister, I think is a very good player, he’s an Argentinian, he had to fly back on Wednesday from Argentina vs Brazil.

“He played but he didn’t make much of a contribution [vs Manchester City], he could be in the game a lot more than I feel he is.”

Mac Allister’s Liverpool career has been one big question mark, with the former Brighton star playing in a new role under Jurgen Klopp that few would have predicted.

It’s clear for everyone to see that the midfielder is better off playing in a more advanced role, a position Mac Allister played in the aforementioned Argentina game against Brazil down the left-wing.

Yet despite poor performances for Liverpool, Klopp is yet to change Mac Allister’s new place in the Reds system, which could be holding back the Anfield side from hitting their true potential.

Indeed, there’s no doubt that Mac Allister is good enough to flourish in this Liverpool team, yet Klopp needs get more out of the midfielder, and ideally in a more natural position.
