Liverpool transfer news as $20m teen 'on radar' and Jürgen Klopp 'looks closely' at young keeper

Liverpool took too long to pull the trigger on its midfield rebuild. But having completed a massive overhaul during the summer, Jürgen Klopp must now feel that his team is very well prepared for the future.

With the additions of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, all 24 or under, Liverpool is set in the engine room for years to come. There is the possibility of signing a specialist number six, with veteran Wataru Endō brought in as a somewhat temporary fix, but it increasingly looks as though Klopp could move away from fielding a player in the 'Fabinho' mold.

Meanwhile, the attack had already quietly been future-proofed in a more gradual manner. A potential departure for Mohamed Salah would still require a rethink, but Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo will all form part of the front line for years to come, as will Diogo Jota.

The defense is probably the next obvious area of attention. Even there, though, the likes of Ibrahima Konaté, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and potentially even Academy graduate Jarell Quansah look capable of carrying the torch.

With that in mind, the focus at the moment is very much on making signings for the long-term future, with the first team looking in broadly healthy shape. Here is the verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Charlie Setford (Ajax)
The Liverpool goalkeeping department has been a topic of much discussion lately, due to the injury suffered by Alisson against Manchester City. Klopp has confirmed that Caoimhín Kelleher would have played tonight against LASK anyway, but he will now be set for a longer run than anticipated.

Fortunately, Klopp rates him as 'the best number two in the world', at least for how Liverpool plays. The Irishman has had to be very patient over the years, with perhaps the best number one in the world ahead of him in the pecking order — but as long as both remain at the club, there's no major recruitment need between the sticks.

However, 19-year-old Charlie Setford is of an age that he could legitimately be an heir to both stoppers. According to TeamTalk, Liverpool, Arsenal and West Ham are all interested in the Ajax goalkeeper, with Chelsea joining the race too.

Chelsea has also shown an interest in Setford's younger brother, Tommy. He is also a goalkeeper, and also at Ajax.
