Liverpool really interested in signing £69m talent who blitzed Manchester City last night

Liverpool have their eyes on a player who did his best to silence Manchester City last night.

As they usually do, City have ultimately breezed through their – rather stale – Champions League group. But five wins from five don’t tell the whole story, with RB Leipzig giving them an almighty scare last night.

The German side went two goals up at the Etihad, before City roared back to take a 3-2 win. And according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri on X, the man who got that pair of Leipzig goals, Lois Openda, has plenty of admirers at Anfield.

“What an amazing performance of Lois Openda during this first half,” Tavolieri wrote. “Belgian striker’s adapting perfectly with the type of play that fits with RB Leipzig.

“The transfer market in Premier League already very hot on him, as LFC. Wonderful talent.”

Prior to reporting Liverpool’s interest, Tavolieri had made another, slightly cryptic post. Clipping a video of the 23-year-old’s second goal of the night, the journalist wrote “LFC calling,” alongside a ‘hush’ emoji and a little telephone. Interesting.

Liverpool hot on Openda trail
Openda’s name has cropped up in regards to Liverpool already this season. Having joined Leipzig from Lens during the summer, the Belgian has been impressing.

With 13 goals in just 20 appearances already for the German side, Openda has signalled himself out as one to watch.

That follows on from a terrific season in France with Lens, where the Belgium international bagged 22 times in 43 games.

Clearly, this is a player who knows where the goal is.

Given Liverpool’s existing relationship with Leipzig, it makes sense that they’d be tracking pretty much every player who makes an impact there.

And having just cooly slotted home two excellent finishes at the Etihad, Openda is at the top of that list right now.

There is of course an argument that Liverpool don’t really need the Leipzig man just now. He does look to be something of an out-and-out striker after all. The Reds already have Darwin Nunez, as well as Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo.

But with a reported £69m release clause coming into effect in summer of 2025 [Christian Falk], perhaps this is Liverpool planning for the future. Either way, it’s worth to keep a close eye on how Openda fares for the rest of the season.
