Report: £50m Liverpool player misses penalty for his national team, now being hammered by fans

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz is feeling the brunt of criticism from Colombia fans after missing a penalty last night.

After a wonderful piece of wing-play, Diaz was a huge factor in his country winning a spot-kick to break the deadlock against Ecuador last night. Having then stepped up himself, the Reds No.7 saw his penalty saved by Moises Ramirez.

It marked another difficult moment for Diaz, who is enduring a slightly barren spell in-front of goal. And now, as a result, Colombian outlet El Espectador claim that fans are starting to turn on the 26-year-old.

They claim that Lucho is ‘not going through a good present’ with the national team. This has reportedly led to the Liverpool winger being a ‘target’ for angry fans on social media.

Despite his ‘extraordinary’ play to create the penalty incident, it’s claimed that Diaz was once again ‘trending’ on Tuesday night. And not in a good way. Head up Lucho, get yourself back to Liverpool.

While Darwin Nunez was the toast of Uruguay last night – his goal and assist handing his country a first win over Brazil in 22 years – Diaz’s evening went the opposite way.

Unfortunately, that seems to have been the trend of the past couple of months for the former Porto man.

He’s still regularly playing well, but Lucho just can’t seem to bang in the goals with any kind of regularity.

Last night presented him with the perfect chance to end that. But in slightly typical fashion, the rub of the green just didn’t go the Colombian’s way.

It’s a shame that his has led to some disappointing reactions from fans online. Diaz gives it his all every game whether he nets or not. He doesn’t deserve that.

But at the same time, he is his country’s talisman right now. Having failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, they haven’t started the new qualifying campaign in the most convincing way either. That’s bound to cause frustration.

Lucho won’t give up or give in, though. The Liverpool man is as determined a character as they come. Let’s hope it will serve to give him a kick to push on instead of going the other way.
