Liverpool transfer news as Jürgen Klopp 'obsessed' by Argentine and $42m Dortmund ace linked

Liverpool has one of the strongest squads in the world, without a doubt. But there is always more work to be done in the market and the planning for the next windows is always ongoing.

Before Liverpool knows exactly what the long-term future will look like, it will need to make a decision on who its next sporting director might be. Jörg Schmadtke did a good job during the summer but a more permanent appointment would seem logical.

No matter when an announcement might be coming about that, though, Liverpool must be considering doing more business in the January transfer window when that opens. Thiago Alcântara and Joël Matip are both out of contract at the conclusion of this season, so if nothing else, it would make sense to sign players in those positions ahead of time.

And then there is the Moisés Caicedo-shaped hole in the squad that will one day need to be filled. Whether the right elite holding midfielder is available in January remains to be seen, but it is still a position that needs to be thought about. Here is the verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all keeping tabs on young Borussia Dortmund forward Youssoufa Moukoko, Spanish outlet Fichajes has claimed. A price tag of around $42m (£35m/€40m) has supposedly been set for the 18-year-old, who has scored 12 senior goals for the Bundesliga side to date.

Chelsea still needs more goalscoring firepower and is never shy of making transfers, while Real Madrid needs a replacement for Karim Benzema. Liverpool is well stocked for the time being but if a player of that quality was available, he should be considered.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Argentina and Boca Juniors midfielder Ezequiel Fernández is on Liverpool's radar, and indeed that Jürgen Klopp is 'obsessed' by the idea of signing him. That is amid interest from AC Milan and Benfica too.

Fernández has supposedly burst onto the scene in South America and therefore big clubs around Europe are taking a look at him. Fluminense star André Trindade is another who is being considered by Liverpool as a possible January addition from the region.
