Liverpool target Andre Trindade confirms he was made a ‘dream’ offer this summer

Reported Liverpool target Andre Trindade has confirmed that he was given the chance to leave Fluminense this summer.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Andre, with claims that they were in talks with the 22-year-old’s club over a transfer.

Ultimately, Andre decided to stay at Fluminense to aid their Copa Libertadores push. With Flu set to play in next Saturday’s final, there have been claims that Liverpool will come again in January.

And speaking to the Copa Libertadores account on Twitter, as translated by Fluminense for foreigners, Andre has now opened up on his failed summer move.

“There’s a lot of things, the last window I didn’t talk about it,” says the midfielder. “It was really I couldn’t refuse; the club, the league, every player dreams to play in a big European club, a big European league.

“I decided to keep my word and stay, because when the January window closed, [Fernando] Diniz [Fluminense manager] told me he wanted me until the end of the year. We didn’t know an offer like that would appear, and no matter what, I’d stay until December. Months passed by, and in the European summer window, we were in the round of 16 of Libertadores. I

“t was a really hard decision, I think that if I’ve accepted that offer, I don’t know if I’d feel 100% comfortable with myself, because I gave my word to Diniz, and he values the word a lot, the honesty.”

Andre also looked ahead to what may lie in store for him in the New Year.

“By the end of the year, I don’t know exactly what will happen, a lot of things can happen,” he says. “But I’m sure that being here, knowing everything went right, helped me a lot as a person, and also helped my career, I got all the national team call-ups of the year. So I think that, as Diniz talked, when we do the right thing, be loyal and honest, good things always happen.”

Andre doesn’t specifically mention any team during his answer here, and it should be said that Arsenal have also been linked.

Either way, you really have to commend Andre for his integrity. His decision to stay at Fluminense has been vindicated, with the Rio club gunning to win their first Copa at the weekend.

Nevertheless, it would have been easy for his head to have been turned by the offer from Europe. Plenty of players have turned their back on their boyhood clubs for less.

If the offer in question really was from Liverpool, then you’d hope they’d honour their own committment and come back in for Andre in January.
