Liverpool could make a move for 22-year-old star with £52m release clause in January

Liverpool and their pursuit of Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio may receive an unexpected boost if injuries strike their key players in the defensive position before the January transfer window.

During the summer, Liverpool had explored the possibility of adding a left-sided defender to their squad. However, they ultimately decided against completing a signing in that area.

Now, Football Insider via ECHO suggests that Liverpool might change their approach in January if key defenders remain sidelined due to injuries. The club’s interest in Inacio stands well-documented, and his recent contract extension at Sporting includes a release clause of £52m.

The potential move for Inacio is further underscored by the uncertain future of Joel Matip. Matip’s contract with Liverpool expires in 2024 (Transfermarkt), and there are questions about whether he will remain with the club beyond that point.

Inacio has shown immense promise during his time at Sporting, and Liverpool’s interest in him reflects their commitment to strengthening their defensive options. The young defender possesses the qualities that Jurgen Klopp values in his players – skill, versatility, and the potential for growth.

While Liverpool’s defensive line remains currently well-stocked, injuries can disrupt even the best-laid plans in football. Also, with the growing ages of the players, it is best to ensure that we have adequate cover going forward as well. Inacio’s left-footedness would give the Reds a wide range of options when it comes to team selection.

While injuries are never welcomed, having contingency plans in place demonstrates the club’s commitment to maintaining their competitive edge in the Premier League and other competitions. No team would know that better than Liverpool Football Club.
