'Discussions are ongoing': Chelsea will sign new player after they sell £50m man - Romano

Chelsea will sign a new central defender after they sell Trevoh Chalobah.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano.

In his latest Substack column, the Italian journalist has claimed that Chelsea will enter the transfer market at some point in 2024 to bring in a centre-back after they offload Trevoh Chalobah and that “discussions are ongoing” already about replacing the 24-year-old.

Chalobah is yet to play a game for Chelsea this season, though he is currently out injured.

According to the Evening Standard, the Blues valued their centre-half at £50m in the last transfer window.

Based on what Romano is reporting on Substack, then, it looks like Chelsea will buy a new centre-back in January or next summer.

It is a strange one, as Mauricio Pochettino already has Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana.

Of course, Silva’s contract is up at the end of the season, while Fofana has struggled to stay fit since joining Chelsea, so perhaps Pochettino and the club have some concerns about the Frenchman.

If Silva does go and Fofana keeps getting injured, then it would make sense for the Blues to bring in another central defender.

However, the former still has value, starting in all of Chelsea’s 10 Premier League games so far. It is worth just keeping him for another season instead of investing in a new centre-half.

As for Chalobah, he could probably save his club a lot of money. But he looks destined for the exit door, with a January departure a strong possibility.

It will be interesting to see who comes in to replace the former England U21 international and how much game time they will exactly get, because Chelsea are not short of centre-back options when everyone is fit.
