'Best for his career': Club president now thinks £43m player is better off not joining Liverpool

Athletic Club president has stated that Nico Williams is better off staying with the Basque side amid recent links to Liverpool.

Speaking to Dazn, Jon Uriarte claimed that the 21-year-old forward should sign a new contract with Athletic, with Williams‘ current deal due to expire at the end of this season.

Valued at £43m, Liverpool have this week once again been linked with a move for Williams, with 90min reporting that the attacker is viewed as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah.

With Williams one of Europe’s highest-rated youngsters, the forward would be quite the addition to Liverpool’s ranks, though Uriarte now thinks the Spanish international is better off staying in Bilbao.

Uriarte said: “We trust that Nico will find the project attractive and we think that’s how it’s going to be. His family is loyal to Athletic, it is the best for his career.

“As for possible rumours, we have no idea. It is a very recurring theme, from Bilbao we have peace of mind. We want an attractive project for Nico and other players.”

Williams is fully aware how good a talent he is, with the versatile attacker having the potential to star for virtually any club in world football.

And signing for Liverpool would be a significant improvement over Athletic, where Williams now looks likely to leave next year.

Indeed, the future of Williams will be an interesting one to keep an eye on, and Liverpool could be a major player in any potential move for the Spanish youngster in 2024.
