'According to our info': Bayern Munich now want to sign £45m Liverpool target in January - journalist

Bayern Munich are weighing up a January move for reported Liverpool target Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips looks set to leave Manchester City in January, having failed to ever really convince Pep Guardiola.

Liverpool have been linked, especially over the summer, but according to journalist Christian Falk on Twitter, the Reds may have stiff competition.

Falk claims that the 27-year-old is actually under discussion as a potential mid-season arrival at Bayern.

“According to our information, Kalvin Phillips is one of the candidates who are currently being discussed at FC Bayern for the winter,” says the journalist.

Bayern have seemingly taken a look at all manner of slightly surprising names since the summer window. Since Thomas Tuchel got the job, he appears to be almost exclusively targeting Premier League players.

Seen through the lens of a Scott McTominay, for example, Phillips would perhaps be a decent option for the German champions.

But nevertheless, he still feels a far cry from some of the legendary midfield generals Bayern have had in the past.

From a Liverpool point of view, Phillips would also be an underwhelming addition. Although he cost Man City £45m barely a year ago, the reality is that it always felt like an overpay from the European champions.

Something like a loan signing in January would possibly be palatable for fans, though. The Reds need a defensive midfielder shaped hole filling sooner rather than later and Phillips could be a stop-gap.

If Liverpool really do have designs on completing that deal then, they need to move quickly.

Phillips is surely better than his time at City has shown and will have some top-level suitors circling during the New Year. Let’s wait and see if Liverpool are one of them.
