Moises Caicedo agent reveals why Liverpool lost out to Chelsea in £115m transfer

Moises Caicedo’s agent has spoken out about Liverpool’s pursuit of the midfielder.

The Reds moved quickly to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer as Jurgen Klopp began his midfield rebuild. Dominik Szoboszlai soon followed but the double departure of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson created a defensive midfield-shaped hole in the Liverpool squad.

After initially targeting Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, it emerged that the Reds had made a British record £111m bid for Caicedo, which was accepted by Brighton. However, there were further twists to come.

Chelsea had been touted with a move for the Ecuadorian throughout the summer and returned with an improved £115m offer. It turned out to be the most unexpected transfer saga of the summer, with Liverpool also taking on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend of the Premier League season as the two sides jostled for his signature.

“It was finalised in the last few hours, but the boy only wanted Chelsea, who had started to show their interest consistently since January,” he told Sport Italia.

It has not quite been the fairytale start Caicedo would have hoped for, though. The Ecuador international has made four appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who have won just one of their five Premier League games so far.

Meanwhile, Liverpool subsequently turned their attention to Japan captain Wataru Endo and brought in Ryan Gravenberch on deadline day. The Reds are arguably still finding their perfect balance, both in midfield and defence, but have dropped just two points in the Premier League and recorded a comeback win over LASK in the Europa League last night.

Speaking about Caicedo’s decision to choose the west London club, his agent Andrea Pellegatti suggested that his client never had any intention of completing a move to Anfield.
